Monsters, All Day

Remember that New Year's Resolution that I made about 25 days ago? It's cool, I was't expecting you to, don't worry about it. Well, it had to do with monsters, and so here's a monster for you to gaze upon.

You can find a few more specimens from this recent batch of monsters in the upcoming issue of "Gag Me with A...", which is a zine that some polite creatures from LA are putting together. The LA Zine Fest is also putting together a zine for their event, which will feature another one of these little monsters, collect 'em all!

Takilma

New Book!

This book is very different from everything else that I've worked on, I drew it in a realism style so I hope nobody minds a break from the cartoons for a few pages. It tells the story of a strange and spooky dream that a friend of mine had. I spent a lot of time working on these pages last Winter, hope you like it... Now back to the toonz!

This book is currently available online at the Gnartoons Online Store and also in real-life at the following shops where you can use paper sacks full of pennies to buy them:

East Bay Zinefest at 924 Gilman

The RPS Collective out of Oakland is putting on the East Bay Zine Festival at the legendary punk club 924 Gilman!

You'll find me at the Gnartoons table.

East Bay Zine Fest
Sunday, November 27th
924 Gilman, Berkeley, CA
Festivities begin at High Noon

This is event is on a sliding scale of dollars, and the event is just for you and your friends.

Punk Rock and Comic Books, you have 2-weeks to prepare, put some patches on those dungarees and come thumb through unknown miracles of the small press sector with me, friends (when I said that this event is for you and your friends, I was really just trying to weasel my way into your group of friends).

PS - This is not to be confused with the other East Bay Book Faire that's happening in Downtown Berkeley on December 10th, where I will also be tabling - more details on that when you need 'em.

There's a new Gnartoons zine out on the market: Beast Begat Beast. It's a comic book all about lustful leviathans and the re-zoning of sea serpent maps. It's already on the shelves in stores in Chicago, Baltimore, Portland, Olympia, Seattle and Oakland, click here for the list of shops (I'll deliver copies to San Francisco, Berkeley, and Detroit as soon as I get this next batch folded up). You can also order a copy with seemingly-fake internet money through paypal here.

The Royal Squid Press

Hear Thee, Hear Thee!

The Royal Squid Press, the newly formed printing branch of Gnartoons, is officially off the ground! I have completely converted my studio apartment into a DIY (ahem, excuse me, I mean *professional*) printing press. I've been busy carving linoleum/wood/rubber by hand in order to print book covers uniquely and authentically. After being pressed, the cover of each book is signed and numbered and then hangs to dry from a tangled web of strings that stretches from wall to wall across my apartment. The result of using strings that stretch across my ceiling rather than using a drying rack is a floating canopy of fluorescent comic-cover-clouds that hang above my bed and drawing table, which I aesthetically enjoy with great immensity.

The first release from Royal Squid Press will be available for purchase in June at independent book shops throughout the San Francisco Bay Area and online at Gnartoons.com. Further information will be posted right here on this very blog and also on the Gnartoons facebook page.

Business as Usual

In 2008 I drew a series of zines/mini-comics about a band of Rastafarian Dinosaurs called "The Herbivores". Yes, it exists. I never finished the series, I got 4 issues in and just sort of lost interest - as is to be expected in any instance where someone is writing/drawing a comic book series about pot-smoking dinosaurs. I still have plentiful copies of issues #1 and #2 if anybody's interested. Here are the first 5 pages of the first issue, which were published on glossy paper by The Fanatic Press in Slambang Vol. III Issue #4 before I ran the Gnartoons book series.
