I went to a chocolate “factory” in Issaquah, WA with a couple buddies today to meet up with an architectural drawing group. The chocolate company was started by an Austrian immigrant in 1942 in Seattle and later moved to Issaquah in 1956, where dude basically built a small bavarian village in the Issaquah forest. I drew a picture of the chapel.

Missed Connections Comix: Free Samples!
I've been travelling around Northern California for the past few weeks and the ample supply of Missed Connections Comix that I had piled up and ready to upload while I was out of town finally ran out. So, please accept this comic straight out of my sketchbook and fresh from the road!

You Don't Have to Go Home, But You Can't Stay Here
Berkeley is attempting to pass a "Sit Lie" Ordinance that will essentially make it illegal for one to be homeless. There was a protest downtown yesterday that moved to the City Council Meeting where protesters demanded an explanation from elected officials as to how such a law could ever even be proposed to the people of Berkeley. I of course did some quick sketches of these events as they unfolded.

Caffe Med
I got up at 6:30 AM this morning, which is more often my bedtime than my time to shine - but I'm making an effort not to be nocturnal anymore and today is day #1. Not remembering how to begin a day at this hour, I wandered up to Telegraph Ave to have a cup of coffee and observe how other humans begin their days. I sat down at my favorite table in Caffe Mediterraneum to begin drawing the first comic page of the day. What serendipitous encounter found me today? A chance meeting with yet another close friend of R. Crumb's - from his legendary reign in San Francisco/Berkeley in the late 60's. After a few quick anecdotes about "Bob's" antisocial behavior while living in the city, I started firing off questions prompting my new friend to take a seat with me and begin to fill my head with fantastical Crumb family history from those early years. I asked a lot of questions, not holding back at all from gushing my love for the man's body of work - I've been tending toward painfully direct in my social encounters (apparently even in my blahging, aren't I supposed to be ranting about trapezoids right now?). After hearing all about my hero's antics and his life as a shut-off hermit, I'm feeling a lot better about my recent lapse back into quiet solitude within a raucous, writhing population.

I apologize if you're not familiar with Crumb's work, but if you don't know who R. Crumb is I honestly have no idea how you got here in the first place. For real, google's right there - educate y'self.

I'm Not Crazy, I'm Big Boned - It's All Muscle
I definitely wasn't in the park drawing this yesterday because I would have been in the rain, but I was in the park drawing this on a different Sunday... When doodles suddenly took over my afternoon...

If I Were A Department Store I Would Certainly Have a Doodle Department
But you already knew that. And since you jumped to that conclusion so effortlessly, it probably wouldn't be a far reach to assume that if I owned a large corporation that manufactured those little rubber valves that go on inflatable alligators and said corporation was so large that it consisted of many branches of offices and factories, unbeknownst to the majority of the workforce, the corporation would have a Doodle Department in it's very own top-secret office-park. My Doodlers would be my highest paid-employees. I would generously treat these fine doodlers to lunches and ball-pit time on a much more regular basis than the masses of gator valve jockeys. And, if I were in a position to reorganize any nation's government there would most certainly be a House of Doodles, it may actually be the only branch of government. Lucky for you (unless you happen to be doodlesomely inclined) I am unmarketable in the political arena, that's why I'm raising a manchurian candidate who secretly lives by the crayon (seen here estimating what the pile height of a day's worth of "keeper" doodles from the House of Doodles might look like).

Berkeley Likes It When You Notice Her Sidewalk Cracks
I sat outside and had a muffin on Telegraph Ave. in Berkeley the other day and drew these trash cans on the curb. I tried to copy the tags off the cans, 'Doja One' and 'KTW' are oficially "all-city" now... or "all-blog" or... "all-sketchbook" or... something...

Being Sketchy in San Francisco
Well, as predicted, Piano Fight delivers with another hilarious production AND I crashed on my Friends Kevin and Alyse's floor again, leaving me with an entire Saturday to meander up, down and through San Francisco. I walked and walked and walked and found a few nice spots to draw while I was in Russian Hill. I was sitting on the sidewalk though, so there was a limit to how long I could draw before:
a) my back and booty started aching and
b) residents started looking out their windows at me suspiciously
...At least, that's the excuse I'm going with for why these drawings aren't finished. The truth is, I'm sharing my secret sketchbook pages with you, never meant for human eyes, the hand-drawn equivalent of words I might whisper to a dog...
